Brain Tumor Surgery

A brain tumor or intracranial tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue where cells grow and replicate uncontrollably and appear unaffected by the mechanisms that control normal cells. Primary and metastatic brain tumors are two different categories. Primary brain tumors are malignancies that originate in the brain. Primary brain tumors are classified according to the tissues in which they develop. The most common type of brain tumor, gliomas, begins in the glial (supporting) tissue. There are numerous types of gliomas. Secondary brain tumors are those that form as a result of cancer that initially manifests itself elsewhere in the body. Multiple characteristics set these tumors apart from primary brain tumors. The medical word describing the spread of cancer within the body is metastasis. The primary (original) malignancy's disease and nomenclature are the same for cancer that has spread to the brain. For instance, if lung cancer spreads to the brain, the illness is described as metastatic lung cancer because the cells of the secondary tumor resemble abnormal lung cells rather than abnormal brain cells.
