The brain is an intricate organ that governs all bodily functions, including thought, memory, emotion, touch, motor skills, vision, breathing, temperature, and hunger. The central nervous system, or nervous system, is made up of the brain and the spinal cord that branches off of it. The central nervous system is divided into two distinct regions: gray and white matter. Gray matter in the brain denotes the outside, darker region, whereas white matter depicts the interior, lighter region beneath. This arrangement is not true in the spinal cord, where the gray matter is located inside and the white matter is located outside. Neuron somas, or the circular core cell bodies, make up the majority of gray matter, whereas myelin, or the protective covering that covers axons, binds neurons together. The two appear as distinct shades on some scans because of the differences in the makeup of the neuron sections. Every region fulfills a distinct purpose. White matter sends information to other areas of the nervous system, while gray matter is mostly in charge of processing and interpreting it.
