Ventriculostomy Surgery

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy ('ETV') is a procedure used to treat obstructive (or 'non-communicating') hydrocephalus, a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid is created in the brain's ventricular system, which consists of four chambers (two lateral ventricles, a third ventricle, and a fourth ventricle) linked by channels. The third ventricle is centrally placed above the base of the skull. When CSF flow is blocked (a condition known as hydrocephalus), the ventricles may swell. Obstructive hydrocephalus occurs when fluid is unable to flow correctly between the ventricles, usually due to a narrowing of the route between the third and fourth ventricles. You should... before any neurosurgery operation, including endoscopic third ventriculostomy. Fast from midnight the night before the surgery (no food or drink), however, drugs are permitted with very few sips of water. Take no nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or fish oils for at least one week before the surgery. If you take blood thinners (such as aspirin, Plavix, prasugrel, warfarin, or other blood thinners), please notify the office or your doctor. These drugs must be stopped a few days before the operation.
